The privately owned parchment document known as the Archimedes Palimpsest is the oldest and unique source of several of the great Greek’s treatises. Dr. Uwe Bergmann, a physicist at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory, recently uncovered missing writings with the help of an intense x-ray beam. The x-ray images revealed writings from some of Archimedes’ most important works covered by mold stains, biblical texts and forgeries. Dr. Bergmann will take us on the fascinating journey of a 1000 year old parchment from its origin in the Mediterranean city of Constantinople to a particle accelerator in Menlo Park.  Uwe Bergmann was born in Karlsruhe, Germany, where he also did his undergraduate work. He received the German 'Diplom' in Hamburg and Ph.D. in physics at Stony Brook University. Since 1990 he has been an enthusiastic user of synchrotron radiation and has worked at numerous synchrotron facilities around the world. Bergmann joined SLAC in March 2003, where his research interests focus on the development and application of novel synchrotron based x-ray techniques.

We're Back!

Join us at our new location: SRI in Menlo Park
We are delighted that SRI International is the new host location for Cafe Scientifique. SRI is an excellent partner, providing us with a beautiful, large, flexible meeting space, supporting us with highly professional staff and making expert researchers available as guest speakers. Since we are now meeting at SRI in Menlo Park, we changed our name to Cafe Scientifique Silicon Valley.

Café Scientifique is a place where anyone can come to explore the latest ideas in science and technology. The Café provides a forum for debating science issues outside a traditional academic context. We are committed to promoting public engagement with science and to making science accountable - all spoken in plain English. There is no admission charge to attend our events. Building on its great success outside the United States, Café Scientifique Silicon Valley is the first such Café on the West Coast.  We meet monthly to discuss a variety of science topics.

In the News

January 3, 2007 Press Release: Café Scientifique Silicon Valley Has New Home at SRI International. The Menlo Park Almanac has a nice article about Café Scientifique’s new home at SRI.

ABC 7 featured the science cafe movement during its evening news telecast on November 13, 2006. Produced by KGO-TV from San Francisco, the segment showed the new larger location for our Silicon Valley chapter at SRI in Menlo Park. Link here for a transcript of the segment along with still photos.
