Dr. McNutt, an oceanographer who directs the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in Moss Landing, will review some of the latest discoveries on issues such as how the ocean controls climate, what limits food production in the oceans, and what novel sources of energy lie in the deep sea. With this increased understanding will inevitably come pressures to re-engineer the oceans for the short-term benefit of mankind. Human exploitation of the land surface is rife with examples of environmentally damaging practices, cases in which mitigation of the damage was costly, time consuming, or impossible. Have we learned our lesson? What are some of the sociological, political, economic, and environmental challenges we will have to overcome before we can do any better with the ocean?
